Are politicians unable to read?

This is a serious question

As you are reading this blog post – or not as the case may be it means that you are, in one way or another, agreeing to terms and conditions laid out by someone. I don’t have a real T&C policy other than don’t post hate speech, other than that most things are allowed to stay on this blog.

But, and the point being, many if not all web content has a T&C somewhere – most put it right in your face and we should rewad them – a lot don’t but that is by the by.

What I am getting at is this:

MPs ask websites to vet content, YouTube has been criticised by MPs, who say it must do more to vet its content.

In a review of net safety, the Culture, Media and Sport select committee said a new industry body should be set up to protect children from harmful content.

It also said it should be “standard practice” for sites hosting user-generated content to review material proactively.

YouTube’s owners said the site had strict rules and a system that allowed users to report inappropriate content.

To me, it is obvious that MPs don’t read what they are criticising – and we must ask why?

This is where you can read YouTube’s T&C – it’s long and concise and it does say what you should do to use the site. Because people don’t do that – MPs feel that YouTube should monitor all the content that is being uploaded, and – as always with the British government – it is to stop the poor kiddies from watching something on there.

Now me – I do something that is pretty simple – let me say this very loudly so it can be heard back in London “I MONITOR WHAT MY CHILDREN DO ON THE INTERNET BECAUSE I CARE ABOUT THEM! I DO NOT NEED MY CHILDREN BEING NANNIED BY SOME WHITEHALL OFFICIAL WHO CANNOT, OBVIOUSLY, READ!”

Frigging idiots!

This is an excellent point, Will. T&Cs more than adequately state the position of platforms like YouTube. However good their protection policy is (and I find it excellence, incidentally), inappropriate material is always going to get through occasionally. As long as they, YouTube et al, act quickly to remove it they are, in my opinion, doing all that they can and need do.

Parental responsibility… we’ve discussed this before. I think you know my position but just to reiterate, I wholeheartedly agree. It is really very simple, and very right. It is the loving, caring thing to do.
